50% of it's stores closing immediately. The rest to run "Sales" for an undetermined time. I went to their largest store in Madison. 30% off! Off of what? Most of the item's in Fishing and Camping were marked 5 to 10% off. Some clothing was marked 30%. Gun's and ammunition were marked 5% off. I checked their handgun and a few rifle and shotgun prices. With their 5% discount they were still much higher on all guns then their completion, Cabela's, just eight miles away. I have to hand it to Gander Mountain. They fired all their experienced and knowledgeable staff some 7 or 8 years ago. Then made sure to be the highest priced outdoors store in the mid-west. Now as a final act they try to screw the customer one more time with a phony "Sale".

I remember I needed some extra 5.56 in a hurry and their prices were something close to $0.50 a round (on "sale", of course) for the same stuff I was getting at $0.26-0.28 elsewhere. Their camping gear prices were silly as well.

Phony sales are nothing new though, pretty much all big-box and major retail stores do them. I've gotten to the point where I automate most of my non-food groceries and essentials delivered from online just to avoid fluctuations and over-spending there. I can't immediately recall the last time I purchased something other than freshness-sensitive food from a retail establishment.

My Daughter grocery shops this way also. She told me she pay's an initial $100.00 fee, then she can order as often as she wants. She claims she and her Husband save a lot of money not buying spontaneous add on to a grocery cart. She's smarter and richer than me, so it must work. Of course, where I live they would probably deliver "Fresh Food" a week later.

You can get anything delivered in this city. You can get bacon & eggs delivered at 2300. I've done it.

For groceries, we like Safeway deliveries or Amazon in a pinch. Amazon is usually faster, but it's more expensive.

I personally hugely prefer rural over urban, but urban undeniably has some perks. Main problem with cities it that they're full of people, and people in large groups tend to be more stupid and dangerous than when encountered in smaller doses.

I wouldn't trade the rural life. My Sister-in-law and her husband just moved into a new Condo in a relatively large town. It's beautiful. One floor, no grass mowing or sidewalk shoveling.. Great. Today I cut the grass and cut up three trees that went down this weekend. Then I walked fifty yards to my shooting range and blasted 3 magazines of .45 out of my Glock 21. I think I'll stay here.

Rather cut grass an other stuff out here than look at concrete an blacktop, can't stand traffic either! One or maybe two cars go down this dead end road a day. I heard that's who bought out the entire chain. Their marketing was so bad. The owner and CEO somehow thought the idea of stocking each store with the same type of product was the way to go. $600.00 leather rifle cases and Salt Water Fishing tackle in Wisconsin? They didn't sell those horrible Black Rifles until everybody had already bought one somewhere else. Whatever they do it might be a good idea to hire people who actually like the outdoors.

Only thing they had good prices on was 1/2oz bass jigs, used to price them around 1.00 apiece, used to buy all the blk/ blu an brown they had. Found a custom maker now that makes 7/16oz an 9/16oz, just different in fall speed to work better.

I admit there are some type's I see that seem to have had stumbling block in the evolutionary chain. Look for missing teeth, bushy, dirty hair under a ball cap, and language that would shock a Drill Sergeant. And that's the Women.

:laugh: In this county, pretty much. Her family has been around here since 1840-something; and in such a sparsely-populated place (the entire county only has around 30k people in it even today), there ends up being a lot of spiderweb-shapes to the family trees.

(A better question is, "If you get divorced, is she still your sister?")
