They sold the 22in model that I wanted so had to drive all over town checking the stores. Finally found another but the little boy-clerk didn't want to sell it to me because, he said, "it would knock me on my butt". He wanted to sell me a 22! After a heated discussion, I walked out with my rifle. :) But the store didn't have any scope mount bases. I drove around even more looking for the bases but no luck. :headbang: May have to order them from Brownells unless I can scrounge something around here.

Anyway its mine now along with one box of ammo (reloading stuff has been ordered and may come in Friday or Monday). Its an absolutely gorgeous rifle and I'll test fire it over the weekend.

I saw in the Brownells catalog that Wild West Guns has a replacement trigger that removes the trigger flop and creep and drops the pull weight to 3 1/2 lbs. Has anybody used this trigger. I understand that a lot of Cowboy Action shooters like it. I'll see how the factory one shoots but may keep it in mind as an option.

Thanks to all for your help and comments and encouragement. Can't wait until deer season.

Congratulations!
Heard about the trigger, but kept mine factory. One thing I've considered is their (WWG) big loop lever. I've got big hands, and the standard lever is unusable with gloves for me.

What kind of ammo did you get?

[rant] BTW, it really pisses me off when I hear morons tell people that something will knock them on their butt. I think they may just be recoil pansies themselves. One girl I used to work with was almost in tears because she bought a J-frame .357, and everyone told her it would knock her on her butt, or it would break her wrist. She was going to sell it before she even shot it because of these a$$holes. I talked her into shooting it, started with .38s then .38 +p and finally Magnums. Her reply after shooting the magnums? "Well, you know it when you pull the trigger, but it not like everyone said it would be." This from a 4'11" (in shoes) girl. All this BS about ___ caliber is uncontrolable is just that, BS. I'm always glad to see fools wasting their money. That is, guys who CLAIM to know, rather than newbies, when they actually don''t know their asses from holes in the ground. The 45-70 does essentially nothing that a $150 12 ga pump wont do, with slugs in the shotgun, and the rifle can't do what the shotgun does, with buckshot and birdshot.

Winchester 300gr JHP. At 22.99 per box, thats expensive and I'll be glad to start reloading.

Magnum, Brownells has those big loop levers. If you have a C&R you can get the dealer discount (approx 20%).

Damn I love that rifle and haven't even fired it yet. :)

Sounds like someone is jealous to me!!!! :nyah: :nyah: :nyah: We have the option of spending our money anyway we want to! Just because you screwed up your life and can't ever own a legal firearm again in your life isn't our fault. Gunkid, look in the mirror and you'll see your worst enemy.

Erika, I hope you enjoy your new purchase. Sounds like its going to be fun.

Andy I skimp a lot on myself and take 'dirty' jobs so that I can have some neat things. I walked into the store and bought my rifle legally. No NICS check because I showed my CCW license. Some of my stuff is pretty nice which is more than you can say.

You can't rain on my parade today.

The .45-70 out of my Marlins and #1 have no problem hitting on target at 400 yards. There's plenty of guys that shoot their Sharps out to 1200 yards, with tang-mounted IRON SIGHTS, and hit. Name one shotgun that can do that.

The .45-70 happens to be a very accurate cartridge and hits like a friggen mortar. Of course someone that flinches so bad he needs a compensator on a .22 would never know that.

I've never owned a lever gun myself, but those Marlins always catch my eye at the gun shows. Did you get the blued or the stainless model? I kind of favor the stainless one myself, but that's only because it seems stainless catches my fancy in ANY gun I look at.

Let us know how it shoots. As for people telling you horror stories about the new gun you are wanting to buy, I had that happen to me as well when I had made up my mind to buy a S&W Model 29. A guy I worked with was almost frantic warning me about the recoil from the .44 magnum and how I would be wearing a long dent in my forehead after I shot it the first time. Well, I bought it anyway, but honestly he did have me a bit worried when I shot it the first time. I had grip of death on that gun when I fired the first round. Heck, I couldn't wait to get into the office to tell him what a wuss he was. :punch:

slowfire is one thing, combat-speed is quite another. If all you want to do is make NOISE (slowly) firecrackers are very low cost.

The 45-70 bullet drops like a stone, and it also drifts in the wind like a balloon. Realistically, it's limited to about 150m in its 405 gr loading, 200m in the 300 gr loading. With some of the better saboted slugs, and a rifled barrel, the 12 ga can do as "well".

Rich, I was told the same thing when I bought my first .44 (as my second handgun). After all the hubbub, I was quite dissappointed in the .44's recoil. The .454 about lives up to the wussed-up hype of the .44. It never hit me in the forehead, but I did see one of these chicken-legged momma's boys about eat the rear sight when I let him take a shot with it (honestly, look at how a big gun recoils in hand, I can see the rear sight hitting someone but the front sight? What do people do, just let their arms fold in? It's be hard for the front sight to hit you in the forehead. Oh well, I guess it's just another case of someone hearing in from their friend's brother's ex roommate's sister's boyfriend, and not doing it themselves).

Speaking of which, Melvin, you got it back-a$$wards again. The heavier bullets are more accurate and better for longer range than the light ones. 300-gr. is really too light for the .45-70. 405-gr. should be the floor, and the long-range shooters use 500+ grain bullets. These are guys who shoot at 1000-1200 yards with these guns and hit their targets, and the bullets are well-known to penetrate a further 4 feet into the ground behind the target at that range.

Rika - congrats and enjoy the "boomer".

All this talke of big-caliber lever guns has got me drooling again about a stainless lever action in .454 Casull, to match my .454 SRH... (Maybe I'll buy me one for Christmas)

I wonder how the .454 Casull and .45-70 compare out of similar-length rifle barrels...?

Rika, pay no attention to that ridiculous man behind the curtain. (Wizard of Oz). Enjoy your new rifle. It's effective enough to hunt anything in North America. Yes, Grizzly, too. Andy is just livid because normal people can buy these things.

it was almost certainly a 50-90 Sharps, and LUCK hits happen all the TIME, dumbass. The bullet DOES have to go SOMEWHERE, ya know. less than 50% success means LUCK, and I'd bet ANYTHING nobody can make even 10% hits on such a mark, with a 45-70, even 10% of the time, without rangefinder, or "spotter shots. :) so JAM your bs punk, cause that's ALL it is, bs.

Less than 50% does not necessarily mean luck. You really don't understand probabilities - we've been down this road many times before. (less than 50% may not be acceptable, but it does not mean luck in all cases)

You make up numbers all the time.
