Man, Clint, be careful handling those ground squirrels. I don't think it's been noted in your area, but in California and other states out west, Bubonic Plague has been passed via flea bites from infected ground squirrels. Once those fleas feel the squirrel growing cold, they are going to start looking around for another host.
And have since then quit touching them at all. They are cleaned up quickly by badgers, coyotes, bears or hawks. Heck, I've even seen the little buggers eating thier own!
