Heavy Caliber Rifles

I define a heavy caliber rifle as one which islarger than .30 caliber. For most hunting in North America I feel a good .30-06, 7mm Magnum or a .270 is perfectly adequate. The only exception are the large bears, Kodiaks, Grizzlt bears and Polar bears.
So I have a .375 R&H Manum pre 1964 Winchester Model 70 with a low power scope in a side awing mount. It can take care of any thing in North America That should be shot at with a rifle,
Do you have a heavy caliber rifle or want one? If you do. what's your choice.

I have a .338 mag. It's my primary elk gun, and every so often I use it on coyotes - use to maintain skill on moving small targets with a heavy caliber.

(of course, since I don't use a can or hearing protection, I must be missing the yotes and the noise is causing them to hemmorage and have holes explode out from their bodies...)

The largest rifle I have fired is a 340 Weatherby Mag. Down the road, would like to have a 375 H&H Mag or maybe a 416 Rigby as I have dreams of hunting Alaska sometime in the way distant future.

I'm a wussy-boy. Heaviest rifles I own are .308's, and don't even shoot those very often anymore.

Used to have a .300 Win Mag Browning BAR (yeah, believe it or not), but got rid of it years ago as there's nothing in Arkansas I figure I need that kind of power for and ammo was stupid expensive. (Yes, JD, the .454 ammo can be "stupid expensive" as well, but it can both shoot the cheaper .45 "cowboy" loads and be reloaded on my progressive pistol press. The BAR couldn't do either.)

Sold my nice brass-laden Thompson Hawken the same time as the BAR; as a .50, that would qualify as "greater than .30 caliber".

I like .50BMG rifles, shot several types. Want one of my own.

After you shoot one about everything else is a small bore.

Oh, I should add I do want to build a bolt action in .450 Marlin and work up some loads for it to see what the case can handle.

poor gunkid. I bet he never shot anything more than a .22 stevens crack shot.

I've shot .458s, .416s, .338 WM, and little .300 WMs. None kick as much as a single shot H&R 12 guage with 3 inch magnums (and yes, I've shot that and I don't recommend it!)

Hard Rock?I've "heard"that the .338 Lapua generally has more felt recoil than a .50.Supposedly due to a lighter design of the rifle. What do you think-having both?

I recently bought a Ruger M77 MK II 338 win mag. I have shot it many times and love shooting it, recoil not bad, just took some getting used too compared to my 270. I haven't used it hunting yet, going to this year, both in some kansas deer and wyoming elk, really looking forward to both...
Any stories on using 338 I would love to hear it.
