Got the new generator wired up to the transfer switch & test-ran it today. Still want to improve it some; mainly flexible exhaust venting so it can be run inside a storage room next to the storm cellar (not the storm cellar itself) and tidying up the feed line to the transfer switch, but it’s at least functional and has the feed line cleanly thru the penetration in the concrete wall so all doors can be closed & secured while running on gen power. The feed line was a little tricky since it’s a 10-gauge I made up with normal L14-30 connectors. Because of the generator’s limited output rating, it has an L14-20 outlet instead. Not having a local source for an adapter and not wanting to wait to finish, I swapped to an L14-20 male plug on the generator end, leaving the 14-30 female end on the breaker box end. Works fine, and is the only option I had that let me finish today.
The transfer switch is manual, not automatic, but I prefer the simplicity of the manual. I was surprised that it swaps between utility power & generator power responsively enough that the security and cctv systems don’t even beep a momentary power-loss condition.
Generator’s not big enough to run everything all at once, but plenty for lights, heater in the winter or filtered intake fan in the summer, radio or tv & dvd player, and other things that run intermittently. Microwave, fridge, coffee pot, hot plate, etc. One more winter-oriented thing crossed off the list.
