ability (so they can MAYBE "buy" enough time to bring their pistol into play?) A few hundred (who also ccw) at MOST, in the entire US. There didn't use to be hardly ANY. The 2 fields of combat were considered to be mutually exclusive. The karate guys didn't want to consider coming up against a gun. The gun people didnt want to consider not getting their gun "out" in time, or the hits not sufficing to stop an attacker.

Well I consider myself to be an average soldier when I was a young infanteer. One night during my second tour in the Middle East on UN Peacekeeping I was jumped by an infiltrator. We ended up fighting over the SMG that I was carrying. I managed to get his hands off the weapon, I stepped back then butt stroked him. He went down and I managed to extradite myself from the situation. There are hundreds of thousands of young soldiers trained today in hand to hand combat in North America, unfortunately some have probably had to demonstrate this ability. Gunkid, your figures do appear to be wrong. Live the reality not a fantasy.

That may have been true in the 70's, but today the situation is very different.

I think you will find, especially in "shall issue" states that the majority of martial artists that are old enough for a ccw will have one in addition to their traditional training.

I think you will be rudely awakened one day with your mistaken beliefs.

Can't speak for "most', but earned belts in three martial arts when younger (Shaolin Kung-Fu, Tae-Kwan-Do, and Shorin-Ryu), although as I said, that was years ago. Have also trained in other "hand-to-hand" things off & on, mostly in the last two or three years.

Fwiw, IMO, wrist and forearm strength are more important than a lot of people think. Decent grip and arm strength will allow just a small number of "locks" and "compliance" techniques to do wondrous things.

No matter how good a technique may be, without strength to apply it, it's nearly worthless.
