Being me, I would give them some food and send them on their way, explaining that it was too dangerous to stay in the area.

what if they start hanging around?
Depends, if there is a disease/plauge risk, give them some food and then tell them to scram or be shot. If not, then boil more beans and put them to work if they can't fend for themselves.

Sounds like the nucleus for the beginnings of a community.
If SHTF and we're thrown back to pioneer days, there's more than enough work to go around. Some of it will be tending gardens/any animals you might have, i.e. getting more food. Getting wood, water, mending clothes, etc.

Depends on the circumstances! Has there been disease, plague, typhoid, etc in the area? Have there been bandits, preditors? How is your own food supply? Are they dressed or equipped in a manner that will benefit you, or even give the impression that they have somewhat prepared? Offer them some food at first, to sound them out, they might not be the type you want to join you.

Andy, you're going to find the homeless all over the countryside after shtf. They will follow you because you're armed and appear to be a powerful person. What are you going to do, kill them?
