JD, you haven't enough experience with the 45-70 nor have you been to enough long range matches to make such claims. It is historical fact that men did make such long distance shots.

The reason that that Custer's men had single shot.45-70 Springfields was that the Army at that time wanted a 500 yard weapon in the hands of it's men instead of the shorter range but faster firing long arms of the day.

The proof test of the .45-70 is it had to shoot a 500-gr bullet and hit and kill (as in right away) a horse at 600 yards. It passed. That's with BP loads, and trapdoor Springfields, not the superior Sharps rifles.
