and .45 L Colt loads(1200+ fps) NONE fell before traveling less than 200 yds. He's ALSO shot several deer with 240 gr jhp's(1400+ fps). NONE made it over 100 yds, 50 yds is more like it. The swc is NOT as effective as a good jhp, if adequate penetration is acheived, and both strike the chest-vitals. A LOT less penetration is needed on men, because you dont need, and don't WANT, an exit wound. The hunter DOES want such an exit hole, because it creates a blood trail to follow, simplifying his task quite a bit. It also makes a pneumo-thorax (collapse of the lung, due to a lack of a proper vacumn in the chest cavity) which promotes a quicker stop of the animal.
However, shoving an EXPANDED jhp thru a rib, on the FAR side of the man, AND thru the highly elastic skin, is a WASTE of 100-150 ft lbs, that are FAR better spent increasing the tissue damage and shock dealt to the vital organs. A pneumo-thorax is no real help in stopping a man, because it takes MANY seconds to have an effect. So does blood loss. So the blood loss out of a second hole is no big help at all. So it "only" takes 10 seconds to stop the man, instead of 20 seconds, so what? He can still fire 30 shots in 10 seconds, with a semi auto pistol. He can fire 18 shots with a revolver, ferchrissakes. He can RUN 50 yds and stab you MANY times in 10 seconds, too. So 10 seconds is NOT a "stop"; 5 seconds is not a stop. 2 seconds is not a stop. until your cartridge is effective,MOST of the time, in LESS than .5 second, it's no manstopper,a nd VERY few handgun rounds qualify.
A quik shok 10mm might so qualify.. a Quikshok .44 mag would. A split nose 460 Rowland does.
