at 300m (or maybe 200m,I forget) So you just HAVE to have a Lion Scout, in 358,you see. I told him that if I was ever attacked by guys carrying 1/2" thick steel shields, I'd be sure to have a BAR, in 300 Win Mag. :) SAME bs as Garand. Bullet placement aint POSSIBLE when you are being shot at, other than keeping MOST of your shots on the chest, perhaps. The heart is no bigger a mark than the BRAIN, so if you COULD reliably hit the heart, why not just brain the pos, hmm? you dont try because you CAN'T. Well, you can't hit the heart, reliably, EITHER. Hits to the heart are not all THAT likely to result in an instant stop, either, because the brain still has 5 second's worth of oxygenated blood in it, at ALL times. A hit to the heart, in many places, with .45 ball ammo will NOT stop the heart from beating, for quite a while, either. Hits to lungs, liver, spleen will not bleed out the man for many seconds, perhaps even minutes, with .45 ball, especially. so "shot placement" is bs, with pistols, when it's for real. u r going to be PUMPING lead as the guy, faster than you have ever fired before in your LIFE. you will be MOVING, as will your attacker, the light will be poor, your eyes will be dazzled by the flashes, of your gun and his, and your ears will be RINGING because of the blasts. Bullet placement my ass.

Now the BG's are carrying 1/2in thick steel shields. More prattle from the shtf guru. All you want is for something to happen so you can go out and murder people. Like so many punks, a big man with a gun or club and a whining sissy without. You'll last a day or two at the most if your wife doesn't shoot you when you try to abandon her.

Consider carefully what you are wishing for.

It totally depends on the grade of steel. 1/2 inch 680 Brinel steel will stop a .50 BMG at 300 yards. I know for a fact that mild construction grade steel will stop about 40% of .308 AP at 250 yards. It will stop 100% of .223 AP at that same range.

Some of the factors you need to look at when you talk steel is the hardness grade, you can use the Rockwell scale, Brinel scale, or the international scale. You need to also look into whether or not the steel was hot rolled, cold rolled, cast, etc. All of that is important when you take into consideration what a plate will stop or not.

Lastly, you also need to realize that the steel may be work hardened as well from various sources.

Now, I'd love to see anyone humping a 1/2 inch steel plate around as a shield. That thing is going to weigh a LOT. I doubt Jeff Cooper made the statement you posted but if he did, it's either out of context completely or he's an idiot for making such a general statement. Somehow, I don't believe the latter is the case.

Man, Hard Rock, where you been, boy? Have you been LIVING under a Hard-Freakin-Rock?!? You have seen a FILM of this very thing, but you're too old to remember!

In one of the spaghetti westerns, Eastwood squares off against the head Mexican bad guy - Julio? Anzio? can't remember, but you know - the guy with the musical pocket watch. At the climax, Eastwood, armed with handgun, squares off against Mr. Pocket Watch, with rifle. After the rifleman shoots him several times and ol' Clint keeps getting back up, Clint does him in. Then, he re-lights his cheroot and flips back his serape, revealing his steel-plate body armor.

"Go ahead ... make my day!"

... or my favorite ....

Clint: "Well, we're not just gonna let you walk right outa here!"

Bad Guy: "WE?!? Who's WE, sucka?!?"

Clint, drawing from shoulder rig: "Smith ... Wesson ... and me ..." BANG!

But I digress ... as usual. :scatter:

it's right in his commentaries, right out of his column from Guns and Ammo, <font color=red>*</font><font color=red>*</font><font color=red>*</font><font color=red>*</font><font color=red>*</font><font color=red>*</font><font color=red>*</font>. He was just selling 358 "Lion Scouts' to the suckers, that's all.

So what any way.

Our group uses steel center mass sized plates to shoot at at various ranges.

At least it's satisfyig to hear bullets striking them.

What's also fun in taking plates about the size and shape of 2liter pop bottles, which originally were some kind of cutting teeth on some sort of brush hog. Spraying tan paint in a tiger strip pattern over the rust brown color and hiding them in weeds that have grown in front of the back stop. Then going back to 600yds and trying to find then hit them. :)

Todd - I'll tell ya what's really cool: Go shoot at steel at 1,000 - you can get the target back in the scope in time to watch the bullet impact. Match bullets just leave what looks like a grey paintball splatter. Fun, Fun, Fun!

so what about you start your OWN thread about missing a lot at 600 yds?
That's up your alley, MISSING.

You think rifles ahve to be used at pistol range, of course since you think you'll be using a "rifle" with a shorter barrel than a contender PISTOL, I guess it makes some sense.
