Nothing else offers any protection at all for the survivalist. Heavy,noisy non concealable weapons, heavy, bulky ammo are out of the question. The foot mobile guy can ALWAYS "fort up" but the guy who NEEDS a 4wd full of stuff CAN'T hack it on foot. He aint got either the right gear OR the ability.

fire, flood, drought, disease, fallout,

enemies, all can FORCE you to abandon your retreat, or prevent your ever GETTING there in the first place. Sure, a spot and cached gear is nice, but dont COUNT on either.

That's why a good map is an essential part of your gear. You can see what would be impacted by a flood, or fire. You can look at prevailing winds and plot against a map. You can plan routes that avoid roads, trails, towns, etc. But without a good map and compass you're toast.
