A friend of mine is wanting to get a new rifle to hunt elk with. We were looking at a Savage .300 win mag with a drop out mag box, sorry forgot the model. Any info on Savage rifles, recommendatoins etc. price range around 300-400 dollars, the savage is going for $349 at dicks sporting goods..

Great, I never have shot one but have heard nothing but good things about them. probably what will go for, can't beat the price either

is he experienced enough to handle the 300 in a bolt action ok? That's pretty serious blast. Will he be in the sort of terrain, is he a good enough shottist, to take advantage of the 300's 100m or so greater range than, say, a 308? he could practice a LOT more with a 308, due to ammo costs. Does he have a 308 to practice with? Will he reload for the 300? The rifle is one thing, the cartridge is another thing, and the shootist is something else again.

Savages are pretty damn ugly, but will put a lot of pricier rifles in their place accuracy wise. They're a good deal $-wise.
