softpoints sure are, even from short barrels and at pretty long ranges (for realistic, defensive combat). A 16" barrel can easily get a 60 gr Nosler over 3000 fps, and it will still have almost 2400 fps left at 200m. 770 ft lbs. Such a hit, at such a range, is indeed still VERY likely to render the man unable to do a thing that realistically threatens you. You don't need more. The 11" 223 "only" has 550 ft lbs left at 200m, but since it's STILL more effective out there than is the much-ballyhooed 125 gr 357 jhp, (from a 4" barrel) is at 10 ft, it's good enough. :)

460 Rowland Split Nose,=223sp type

shock and destruction,in animal tests. Since it has the advantages of the 3 segments, each making its own wound track, with the temporary cavities overlapping each other, it tears up MORE tissue and it causes more shock. The .45 has 4x the frontal area of the 223, and adequate penetration(at least of the rearmost, 40gr, wadcutter-shaped segement) is assured. It really IS one MEAN SOB of a load, on the receiving end. It truly does make a real ccw gun REALLY effective at stopping men. It's every BIT as effective at the job as is a blast of 00 Buckshot. Yes, the 1 in 50 or 1 in 100 RARE exception is still present, JUST like it is with the 00 blast. However, it's a LOT more likely to suffice than are "normal" jhp loads.
