Naaa, here’s something we can, still, talk about: I have long thought that the Russian 7.62 x 39mm Kalashnikov rifle round is far superior to the American 5.56 x 45mm assault rifle round. With either 55grn. or 62 grn. ‘pills’ the M16 is useless for any kind of, ‘precision work’ after, about, 225 meters. At ranges in excess of 275 meters, typical 5.56mm groups start to open up to 7 or 8 centimeters – or more! This may not sound like a lot; but that’s enough to easily miss, both, a killing shot or, even, an entire man-sized target! This is the reason, ‘Why’ the Remington Model 700 in 7.62 x 51mm continues to be the standard arm for our military snipers to use.

Personally, I’d take the 7.62 x 39mm with its 122grn. bullet every time for serious battlefield use. You get the best of all worlds in one ideal military round. It’s effective out to, about, 350 meters and penetrates most (but not all) military body armor well. The 5.56 x 45mm might have done well for itself in Viet Nam where the typical range was less than 150 meters, and the average body weight of an opponent was less than 50kg; but there have been a tremendous number of complaints about the performance of the M16A2 coming out of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Rumors are currently circulating that the American military is testing and getting ready to switch to a new 66 (+/-) x 45 (+/-) mm military rifle and round. I’m glad that I’m much too old to be taking part in today’s, ‘fun ‘n games’; but, if I were, I’d dump my M16 at the first opportunity, and grab hold of one of the new, ‘100 series’ assault rifles that the Russians are, presently, using. Fact is Russian small arms equipment and design is absolute, 20th century, state-of-the-art! At the present time Russian small arms performance and design are well ahead of the rest of the world and the United States along with its NATO allies are busy playing catch up.

See that! (And you thought there was nothing more to talk about.) By the way, what do you think of the new Russian, 100 series, assault rifles? As you might guess, I say; 'Screw the 101 and 102; but the 103 and 104 - Now that's saying something! (Oh, yeah, 'Screw the 105, too!)
