within a 10 mile radius of the starting point. Even if he DOES start out moving to the west, NOTHING prevents him from doubling back at some point. you have NO way of knowing if he's got (or will find) a vehicle, horse, bicycle, boat, raft, etc. 20 mile diameter circle has 63 mile perimeter, and to ENCIRCLE him, and KEEP him inside the circle, if he's got a silenced .22 rifle, you'd need a man every 50m, at night. :) A 10 mile radius means that the AREA inside of that circle is 314 square miles, each one of them having 640 acres. One man can't search more than 20 acres of woods a day(and hope to find a prone man, rifle armed, using brush and a depression as concealment) So, in order to search 640 acres, before the guy moves ON (the next night) you'd need 30 buddies x 314 means you'd need 10,000 men, and you wont have TEN, come shtf.

You aint gonna chase ANYBODY, or find anybody, beyond some idiot kid, unarmed, post shtf. All you'll do is get shot, abandon your family to WORSE depradation while you are gone. Maybe YOU are that stupid, but nobody else in your area will be. So you'll be chasing that guy ALONE. he's going to set an ambush on his back trail, after turning 90 degrees, or doubling back on his trail, and THERE you come, following his trail, like the idiot that you are. post shtf, stupidity like that is going to be 100% fatal.

You use of numbers shows you know nothing about searching, tracking, or tactics.

You don't need nearly that many people.

But, if it makes your shtf fantasy work for you, then, sure you have to have that many people....

Given your lack of tactical knowledge, lack of knowledge of fieldcraft, lack of knowledge of land navigation, you better hope your opponent is using a walker and suffering from severe arthritis! Cause thats the only hope you have of evading him/her.

Boast away Melvin, you are in for a rude awakening. Most if not all people are better at fieldcraft than you.

Anyone traveling that distance in the dark will leave a trail of sign like a heard of elephant in a mine field.
Our Excitable Boy knows squat about tracking and sign cutting
Also a Melvinous Ignoramus quality ghillie suit will probably be shedding like a mangy siberian husky.

And again his inner sociopath can't grasp the concept of humans banding together and working together in a crisis. Other than Brigand's and other low life scum of his imaginary ilk.
When in reality those types would size him up while listening to his bull shit then laugh while cutting his throat and taking his gear.

his stumbling around in the dark will probably have one or more of several consequences:
  1. he won't know where he is
  2. he will injure or kill himself (same thing according to him - all injuries are fatal)
  3. he will stumble into a group who will kill him outright
  4. he will walk past viable food and water sources without knowing it (remember, no map or compass)
  5. he will lose his gear or break it
