I like the old guns, I have a bunch, but don't they HURT? I shot my 8MM Mauser about thirty times recently, and then a friend's M44 Mosin-Nagant for another twenty and my shoulder felt like I was kicked by a mule! My hat's off to troopers that shot hundreds of rounds with the Mauser on the Russian front, and FEMALE Russian snipers that fired 40 to 50 rounds per day in the battle of Stalingrad. I read that the men of the 24th Regiment of Foot Infantry at Rorke's Drift got so sore from firing their Martini-Henry's that they started firing them off the shoulder, from the hip! Say what you want, I'll take an M-16 any day.

During the Spanish Civil War in the 1930's there was a fierce battle as a town was taken. Many of the defenders ditched their uniforms and tried to melt into the local population instead of surrendering.

The victors, realizing that many of the defenders were posing as civilian locals, simply rounded up every man in the entire town and then ordered them to strip off their shirts.

Anyone with the tale-tell rifle recoil bruise on the shoulder was summarily shot for being an enemy soldier out of uniform.

My guess is that in the heat of battle, with all the adrenalin flowing, a man wouldn't even notice his sore shoulder. Then during the lulls when he got to rest, he simply wouldn't care because he was so glad to be alive for another day. Sore shoulder or not, they sure are fun to shoot - and attention getters too.

It's not that the rifles kick all that hard. Those old cartridges are in the .308/.30-06 rang of power, which, contrary to what many seem to think, are not hard kickers. What it is with those old guns is that darned METAL buttplate. 'Course a buttstroke with one hurts more than with a plastic rifle too, so. . .at least there's symmetry.

all u have to do is remove the steel pos, fit a shotgun recoil pad for the shooting part of things. 2 screws,remove it for the suckers to ooh and ah over how "original" the old pos is.
