I started getting pretty heavy into C&R guns, and noticed the M48A Mausers and Mosin-Nagants kick like hell. Those steel buttplates can really whack your shoulder. Since you are shooting your new 45/70, I thought I would give you a heads up on the PAST recoil system. It slips over the shoulder and straps around the chest. $28.95 from Cabelas, Inc. Worth the money, and makes the recoil SOOOO much easier to handle. I know your built differently, but the system accomadates females. I just put fourty rounds through an M-44 Carbine, and it was not much different than firing my AR-15.

Thank you Terry. I will certainly look into the PAST system. The Marlin with its thick rubber recoil pad doesn't thump me very bad but I suffer when I shoot a lot of rounds from the Springy 1903 and the Nagant.

I really wouldn't mind putting a sore shoulder in the PAST.

I bought my PAST shoulder pad back in the late '80s for shooting Service Rifle. When we changed over to that POS in 5.56mm that we now use, I found that the stock was to short for me. The pad made up for the extra length that I needed with the C7A1 Rifle(M16A3).

These days if I feel like putting 100 rds through my .30-06 Remington M700 the pad goes on first and I'm a happy camper all day long.
