The AK will do the job; its like the Chevy of combat rifles - almost everybody can afford one. Rifles like the M1A, Sig, FAL etc are more expensive and more finely appointed with better accuracy but the AK can do the job. The bad guy will never know whether he died from the 7.62x39 or the 7.62x51.

You have to understand what the AK was intended FOR, before you can say whether or not it's a viable weapon.
The Soviets were not real big on educating everyone like we are (were), nor are they into professional armies. So they needed a weapon that can handle rough handling and neglect from what amounts to peasant conscripts, and the eve more varied and harsher climates. The AK fits these parameters in the assault rifle world like the Mosin-Nagants did in the bolt action world. It was designed for extreme reliability, not accuracy. Russian weapons are, for the most part, loosey-deucey, for reliability sake.
Then there's the Russian/Soviet theory on infantry tactics. If you can't hit the target with a single rifle, employ volley fire. If that's ineffective, point your pistol at the troops and force them to charge and take the enemy by brute force of numbers and large volleys of fire up close. Hence the popularity and widespread issue of high capacity magazines for the AK.
Russian soldiers are not treated as individuals, they are considered in numbers as a certain numerical value of firepower, and they are not afraid of sending their troops to get mowed down in numbers to take an objective. Very different from the western point of view which considers each soldier valuable and should be an effective weapon on their own.
For the Russian perspective, the AK is a near perfect design.
It is, however NOT the best design for the individual to use. If you have to go on the cheap, you're probably better off with an SKS until you can afford a better weapon. At least the Russian SKSs I have are considerably more accurate than an AK. Of course Russian specimen are not what you find at the local swap meet for $80. . .

It's all about applying the right tactics to the weapon and the situation.
i.e. It's the weilder, not the weapon that matters most.
If you understand the limitations and strengths of any weapon you have, then you are never completely outgunned.
Even the shotgun, which GK likes to dismiss as a toy can be used quite effectively within it's envelope.
Being a one trick pony and failing to learn the strengths and effective application of various weapons will get you killed. quickly.

Hey, easy there 84 C4. thank you for explaining. Sometimes I get a bit prickly just like you guys do. I drive an older Ford Crown Vic but the guy I'm dating now is restoring an older 60's Porsche. Sometimes he lets me drive it on a dirt track. Great car and it corners like oil in a pipe.
We're all friends here but sometimes even friends can misunderstand each other. Thats the reason we communicate.

BTW: I'm fixing up a 1984 Corvette
The Corvette will be raced...when I scrouge the money together to finish it. Ultimately, I plan on putting in an LS2 or LS7 and a 6-speed tranny into it, and tightening the suspension. I can't really drive it around, have you seen the gas prices recently? It costs $25 to fill up my little Impreza.Raider said:Neat! I'm also going to have to leave my vette behind, in Houston :bawling: , so I don't know if it would be appropriate to post there, yet.BTW: I doubt I'd want to be with a girl I can pick up by virtue of my motorcar...unless they want to bolt a supercharger onto it.

Excellent post, you have hit the nail on the head. The AK-47 is a remarkable weapon, doing just what it was designed for. The average Russian, Chinese, or Vietnamese soldier is not a marksman or is terribly concerned with weapon maintenance. The AK was designed to WORK, period. My AKS, Chinese variant, does well to group 5 inches at 100 yards, my Colt AR-15 will do 1 inch at the same distance. As you have stated, American soldiers are trained to be able to fight as individuals, not enmass, as the above armies are trained to do. Weapon maintenance was drilled into our pointy little heads and it built confidence in us. Different philosophy's, but I like ours better.Magnum88C said:
