When I worked the border back in 79 - 83, there were a few truly enterprising ******** who routinely crossed the border afoot west of Calexico, Ca. (Garden Spot of the USA) and trekked all the way to Los Angeles afoot. They stayed in the mountains and knew the passes and water holes quite well. Evidence of their treks was recorded by Border Patrol Pilots flying recon in the area.

Look at a map for yourself if you have any curiosity at all, and see just how far that is to walk. Absolutely friggin amazing because thye usually made it in less than ten days in some of the harshest terrain in the USA.

I spoke to a few of them who claimed to have done it before, and who were headed that way when I arrested them. They had the barest of essentials with them, clothes on their backs, a hat, sandals, a few tacquitos, water bottles, MAYBE a knife, and a knowledge of the terrain. Of course they also had something else, a determination not to get screwed by the coyotes (smugglers) and not to get caught by La Pinche Migra (the BP).

When the SHTF for real they will survive.

This is an intresting topic, I've mused before here, how some of the most qualified "survivalist" have never heard of "bug-out bags", "survival" knives or "survival" guns. They won't even notice when SHTF.

I have been to several very poor countries and have seen the true survivalist in action, just amazing how they get so much done with so little.

I think that a determined, knowledgable person can survive with whatever they have at hand. Makes me think of the POWs in WW2, Korea and VietNam. They made it - in captivity - with whatever they could scrounge up. Some even escaped successfully.

It is amazing what people will resort to in order to survive. A couple of years ago I read the book 'Night' by Elie Wiesel (spelling?). It was an account of his time in the Nazi death camps. While I would be willing to wager that some of the book was either convenient recollection to fit the story line (maybe or maybe not purposefully done for literary license, maybe or maybe ot due to the trauma or just to the years that went by), I think a lot of it was probably very factual. It is a very small book and a very quick read.

If you want to read about survival at its worst, read this book. I say survival at its worst because it was just that because so few fought back. For the life of me I will never figure out why so many gave in without a fight, and then once they realized what was happening why they did not at least go out with a fight. Whatever the reason that is what happened, but many were able to survive (barely) what was some of the until then most unimaginable experiences ever.

It is an extremely telling story, and quite tragic and graphic - so if you decide to read it be prepared for images to be branded into your mind's eyes. it certainly could be used as a primer against tyranny, and should be required reading for all those who support gun control. This took place only 64 years or so ago, and could easily happen again as it almost did on the same scale in Bosnia/Serbia and the surrounding areas.

I highly recommend this book to anyone concerned with survivalism.

One of my favorite escape stories was where two American flyers escaped from a German POW camp and walked out of Germany in plain sight.

They had a briefcase, a measuring tape, a clipboard, some paper, and a pen.

Wherever they went, they just started measuring things and looking serious and official. Everyone just assumed they were on official business so no one ever bothered them.

There a lesson there.

Sometimes the best place to hide is in plain sight. This is why I have a serious disagreement with all of these 'patriot' types that advocate 'dropping out' of the System by plastering themselves with numerous red flags by writing letters, formally renouncing their SSN, 'State Citizenship', etc. You do that stuff and the 'Eye of Sauron' zooms in on you pretty quick (and you ain't Frodo the Ringbearer either).

Know what I consider my two most important pieces of 'survival gear'? A swiss army knife and a real passport.

'SHTF' is nothing new. It has happened many times in many forms. There are always those who survive and even those who profit and prosper. In many ways, humans are like cockroaches, they are really hard to totally wipe out and they adapt surprisingly well.

Know which people in Europe faired best during WWII? It wasn't those with a couple years worth of food and maybe some rifles, or those that hid in the hills, mobile and armed to the teeth (and both types existed). It was those with packed luggage, a wad of cash, and a steamer ticket who got out while the getting was good.

shtf, REAL shtf, has NEVER occured ANYWHERE. There's ALWAYS been SOMEPLACE you could go, and get resupplies. real shtf, there will be NO such place, and also, there's NEVER been such a high % of worthless, and WELL armed people.

The ******** might last a couple of weeks with such meager gear, but then they are COUNTING upon being someplace where the living will be MUCH easier, and where they won't have to FIGHT. shtf, you are GOING to have to fight, because at LEAST 10% of guys who notice you at all are going to shoot you on sight. Your map and compass wont mean a thing. They wont want your COMPETITION for resources, or will shoot just to see you fall.

You're expecting a sudden mass panic happening overnight, just because everyone is a chickenhead and they feel like it, and 90% of the people conveniently dying off to make the world better for you, again simply because everyone is a chickenhead and dying off is just all they can do.

People and events do NOT work like that and you've never actually explained how such an event can occur, because it can't, NOT in that manner.

Nothing will cause a worldwide SHTF like GoonKid describes. Anything that COULD do that, i.e. overnight back to the stone age, overnight EVERYWHERE being just as bad as EVERYWHERE else, would make the entire planet uninhabitable in short order.

GoonKid's SHTF can never happen. There will always be some where better to go than the SHTF area, or there will be nowhere to go, and no one survives.

It's another of his strawman arguments that has no basis in reality, but that he load the numbers on to make it look like what he advocates would work.

So the Jews in the concentration camps did not have the sh it hit the fan for them, HHHHMMMMMMMMM? Are you that much of a dumbarse, HHHHMMMMMMM? What are you thinking would be a SHTF situation, HHHMMMMMMM? Let me guess, HMMMMMM. My guess is that you would think it would be like this:

Aliens attack the earth, and zappo ray blast all the essential military bases, and command centers. Governments are quickly destroyed. All major cities are blasted likewise, communications destroyed. Roads, airports and shipping all disintegrated. ALL Walmarts blasted into oblivion. Then, the aliens start a slow methodical annihilation of the population of the earth. All the people are killed off except for you, and a commune of psychopathic lesbian survivalists in Idaho. You are determined to survive with or with them. They on the other hand determine you are worse than the aliens and see you as competition for resources. There are no supplies and you have to compete with the ****** to live off the land. The only unscorched pieces of earth available are Central park and prospect Park (both in NYC). You set up base in prospect Park and the ****** in Central park. Both you and they can feed off of the Zoo animals and whatever canned food you can scrounge; but beware, the aliens are hunting you down. Even though the aliens are zapping everything they see moving with zappo ray blasters - you are a real man (if only because you are now the only man) and you will survive or pee in your pants and cry for mommie. If you cry enough will your other fantasy come true, will the ****** decide to get all maternal over you and save you from being shafted (ah double entendre or is it triple) by the aliens? Go get em fantasy kid!

Is that your scenario dumbarse? No matter what you say, my guess is that everyone here will probably agree that they believe that is about it in your mind! I think that you have absolutely no comprehension as to what amounts to a SHTF scenario because I believe you have little, if any, real life experience in anything that matters. You repeatedly, in my estimation, and apparently in the estimation of others, show that you have little to no tactical experience or survival smarts. You evidently, as I see it, believe that no one has ever known as much as you, been as prepared as much as you, been as successful as much as you, or suffered as much as you. Actually what I think is that no one is as ridiculous as much as you.

Why not get a life, HHHMMMMM? Why not realize that yes the SHTF many times even in recent history, HHHHMMMMMMMMM? Why not also realize that the SHTF is not waiting for you to be ready for it to happen, just so you can look good, HMMMMMMM? Most of all though, realize that when the SHTF it most likely will not do so in a manner that is the way you expect it to be because after all, you are not the great all knowing guru of survivalists. You are, in my opinion, just about as useless as a piece of maggot ridden shaite when it comes to your so called tactical and survival knowledge, and I for one think the ****** would remain ****** even if you were the last man on the earth!
