It would be easy to perform an experiment to safely answer the "knife at 6 feet" question. Wearing appropriate safety gear, GK could use an Airsoft repeater pistol and the other person, six feet away, could use a rubber knife with ink on the blade. Based on the description by GK, the rubber knife participant initiates the experiment with their move.

Who do you think will win?

throw a few other scenarios into the mix - five or six people all within 6 of GK. Only one of them is the "tango" and he does not know who it is ahead of time.

do the drill several times, but do not have the attacker attack each time. start the attacker at different positions relative to the shooter.

apply various mixes of each scenario.

More often than not, the knife will win, unless the guy with the knife is a total idiot.

Oh, and if the shooter shoots the wrong person, he loses because he has murdered a non-combatant.

Melvin will have to be in his normal street clothes and without his hands in his pockets just as he would normally be if he didn't want to be viewed as a pervert.

I bet on the knife guy/gal.

If the gun is in a holster or pocket or waistband, the knife wielder wins. If the gun is out in the hand the knife wielder should also win. In fact the guy wielding the knife should be able to get in at least 5 or 6 slashes withthe holstered gun, probably incapacitating the gun hand or arm or both hands or arms. He may also deliver a killing stab wound or two - but a smart knife fighter would first go to incapacitate. With the gun out a couple to a few slashes could be made, more by an expert knife fighter. It is really amazing how the ininitiated will go for the gun rather than for hand to hand knife take aways or use whatever may already be in the hand or near at hand that would be a better choice than going for the gun in a really close in knife situation. It is also amazing how few think immediately to go for distance and cover. I don't mean just jumping back a bit. That is all fine until you stop to shoot at which point you get sliced and diced. When you have been sliced good, or spoken to someone who has, or maybe even just seen a video of it, you will learn that when a guy brings a knife to a gun fight, distance is the gunman's friend and cover is a great pal.

Best regards,

It'd be kind of like an Alien vs Predator movie: "GK vs Hannibal Lechter"

In 'Hannibal', Lechter's favorite weapon was a Spyderco 'Harpy'. He did some pretty ugly things with it. :eek2:

If as knife weilder can get within 7m then the pistol holder had better have the pistol on target and watching, but thats impossible with multiple targets especially when spread oiut across a better than 120 degree arc.
This has been demonstrated to death by the LAPD, NYPD, and "Gun Gurus" since the early 70's, and I tend to believe they may be right.

I've done tests similar to this, and the knife guy always "wins". We used a wooden pistol in a holster and a dry erase marker in the pocket, the marker simulated drawing a knife from pocket and opening blade. We were at 10', and many times we were at belly button range before the "gun" could even be cleared. If the gun guy keeps moving back, the knife guy simply keeps moving forward. Much easier to move forward than back, always the problem of tripping on chair, table, own feet, knife guy's feet, whatever as you move back, while the man moving forward is able to cover much more ground, faster.

Keep in mind also that one shot or even several doesn't neccessarily mean that the assailant is stopped...I think it more than likely that both people would be going to the hospital if that test was a for real scenario.

u don't have a fucking CLUE, dude. If I have room in which to move, the guy will never TOUCH me, and he'll look look like a SIEVE in one second flat.
Maybe, but your lack of perception as to how fast a man can move on you as evidenced in the recent thread on unarmed skills seems to belie that.

I doubt the guy with the knife will have much to fear from you, for a number of reasons.

Your inability to move like you describe being chief among them. Then there is the little matter of you not having the gun, or the marital arts experience. (You may have the belt, but your posts are a dead giveaway...)

I agree with Wyly. Even if you shot the attacker 3, 4 times, he's still moving towards you at great speed, pumped with adrenaline, and by the time you even got those shots off, hed be pretty damn close anyway.

I remember watching a program on the new stun guns, and it stated the LE Community recognized 24 ft as the range where melee weapons become more effective than a firearm. Or something to that effect, it was on the History Channel a couple years ago.

a BIG chunk of the issue is how SLOW they are, at reacting, recognizing the threat, deciding what to do. Then they are slow on the draw, slow for repeat shots, and they just STAND there, like dummies. Then, on top of everything else, they use crap ammo.

with an openly worn rig, if you wait to see a FAST man draw, he's already shot you before you can fire a gun you've got AIMED at him, even when you KNOW he's going to "try" you. That sort of speed is a full one second faster than the typical cop can draw and fire a one handed hip shot. THAT is how the knife man gets 10-15 ft closer, the pistol man's being 1 full second slower on the draw than he SHOULD be.
