Shooter action games

I have a confession to make.

I REALLY like playing first person shooter types of computer games. Does this make me some sort of raving lunatic with a blood lust?

The other day I was in CompUSA picking up a power supply for one of my computers that has bitten the dust and noticed a computer gaming magazine at the checkout line. There was a big headline on there something to the effect of "23 NEW GAMES REVIEWED FOR GUYS WHO LIKE GUNS". Well heck, you know I had to buy that magazine!

Yup, I like all the neat weapons and mowing down the bad guys and monsters. I like to creep around some unknown terrain not knowing when something is going to jump out at me and I either blast or be blasted. So is this normal? It's not like I forsake all else to play the games, but when I have a few minutes to relax, playing a game like that is pretty high up on the list for things I would like to do.

Anyway, just rambling on late at night. The wife is getting ready for bed else I would crank up a game right now. I can use headphones, but it just isn't the same as having the speakers blasting and feeling the room shake.

Rich,
I know what you mean. I love the first person shooter games. My PC doesn't have all the fancy video cards and what not. I am addicted to the X-box. They have some very good shoot-em-up games. Lately I have been spending all my free time playing soilder of fortune II. Very nice game and quite a selection of guns. The part that I really enjoy is the sniper rifles with the nice zoomable (is that a word?) scopes. Another good part is when you hit someone in the throat you can hear them "gurggling" (sp?) on thier own blood. Yeah I know i'm sick and twisted. ;)

Ya gotta get yourself an x-box Rich, you'll love it!
Heck, I have a 21 inch monitor, REAL fast processor, top of the line video board, and kick ass speakers on my computer. I'm not sure an X-box would give me anything better than that as far as quality is concerned. Plus I just wouldn't have anyplace at all to put another box in my den. I have to squeeze in sideways to get to my chair in the middle of my other three computers as it is.

What I am waiting for are video goggles that will completely immerse you in the image. Of course, there will probably be a new medical malady called "gamer's neck" when that happens because people will be snapping their heads around for hours on end during a game trying to keep an eye all around them.

Glad to see I'm not the only one that likes this sort of thing. Heck, if enough people were interested, I would put a shootem-up gaming forum right on this site. What the heck....

Thanks.
I'm with Ken, X-BOX rox. I justified it because it doubles as my DVD player. ;) I run it through the surround sound in the living room and have movie quality sound. (Actually have to watch out so the neighbors don't complain).

Hey Ken, have you tried Knights of the Old Rupublic yet?? Not a shooter, but a great game. Halo and Ghost Recon both fit the bill though.
Gary,
Yeah Halo is an awesome game for sure. I hate to think of all the hours I have spent playing that one. Although I do get a bit upset when my 5 year old son gets farther than I do. Yup tried those games as well Gary. If you like those you have to try Solider of fortune II. I bet you'll love it. Plus I do have the codes for "god mode" it make take all the fun out of the game but getting to blow up people with rocket launchers makes it all better;) I'm also into the James Bond games, he always has some nice weapons and all the extra toys you get to play with is yet another plus.

Rich,
They have a new 9" flip up screen that fit on top of the console itself. So now you can play it where every there is a power outlet. I can see you sitting at the next show playing an x-box while your wife sells all your snakes.
I like playing my Carnivores series on the computer, when I have the time. Something about hunting a T-rex just fascinates me. Now Chuck is heavy on the shooting games...Playstation and now Playstation2. In fact, he is currently involved with SOCOM for PS2, but also really likes the Metal Gear, Silent Hill and Syphon Filter series. He also likes the AceCombat series. He'll play these games non-stop during his free time until he's finished them! I think he's hooked!
I'm addicted too!! I have also been playing Medal Of Honor alot with my son, and I'm 36! I don't think your crazy.
Ken Chiarella
Ken,
Medal of Honor is a great game, although the first board took me a little while to figure out what needed to be done. I'm really looking forward to the second version of that!
I have MOH for X-Box but liked the PC version much better. X-box version reminds me too much of the old Wolfenstein Castle. Plus the PC version allows you to steal a Tiger and assault a town. As an armor guy, that beats shootin' up the bad guys with a shoulder fired weapon any day. :D
Although there is one thing about a PS2 that I really like. They get to have a hunting game, us X-boxers have nothing like that, and reading the x-box magazine it looks like there is nothing in the works for such a thing. Too bad, those are about the only games I play on the PC.

I just saw that there is a Cabela's Deer hunt game out for X Box. It was less than $30 at Walmart. I also saw it for PS2...not sure about gamecube.

There is one great thing about PS2. They have more games available than anyone. It is the main reason I bought it. I am waiting for the PS2 version of syphon filter. If anyone likes first person games, SOCOM Navy Seals is great. I will have to bolo Halo though, it sounds like my kind of thing.
If anyone likes PC, check out Jetfighter 4. It takes some computer savy to get it running, but go online and go to the boards and you will get the simple instructions. Best damn simulator ever. Best of all, it costs about $10 at Walmart. Get a joystick for best performance.
Chuck
Mike,
Thanks for pointing that out to me, I went out today and picked up deer season 2004. Quite a game. I really enjoy the camera view as the bullet. Anyone with an x-box needs to check that one out and heck for $30 can you really go wrong?
Games

I like first person shooter games aswell. But I find that the games generally aren't challenging enough. I have some games such as Red Faction, HitMan2, and a bunch of others. But my all time favorite game(s) would be these two awesome on-line combat games. Team Fortress Classic and Counter-Strike, both of these games are addons to the game Half-Life which is a single first person shooter and also has an online deathmatch/teamplay mode. I'd suggest getting Half-Life and these mods if your already staying at home all day every day :D .
Counter-Strike is precision based with a variety of weapons, and, if you are capable of aiming with the mouse and using adequete bursts of fire, very, very, devastating to the other players.
Team Fortress allows players to "respawn" after each death as opposed to in counter-strike where you must wait for the round to be over. TFC (Team Fotress Classic) is fast paced and non-stop action. Primarily in Capture the Flag format. Nine different charectors, each with unique abilities and a small-range of weapons. But is a very captivating game.

Call of Duty looks like a good one

Rich, you familiar with the Medal of Honor series? A competitor is coming out this month called Call of Duty.

They're all WW2-based shooters with fairly interesting and mostly accurate weapon dynamics. Call of Duty (I only have the demos now) seems to feature the following:

US
M1 Garand
Thompson
M1A2 Carbine
Colt 1911
Springfield '03 with scope
BAR

German
Mauser 98K- with or without scope
MP 40
Sturmgewehr MP43
FG42- my favorite by far!
Luger
MG42

Brit
SMLE
Webley .455 (I think)
Mk. 4 (I think- its the late model Lee Enfield replacement for the SMLE)
Bren
Sten

Russian
Mosin Nagant- with or without scope
PPsh

I think it has a few others too, but these are the only ones I'm sure about. Gameplay is really strong in the demos so far.

Actually I have never purchased the games with more traditional realistic weapons in them. I tend to prefer the real exotic stuff, even to the point of being wildly unrealistic. But fun, nonetheless.

However, in the Unreal Tournament game, my favorite weapon was the sniper rifle. Lots of fun with that one! Then the dummies went and removed in it from Unreal Tournament 2.

Oh well.

Heck, I have a couple of games I bought and haven't even started playing them yet. Just getting over my busy season, so maybe I'll have some time over the next couple of months for some play time.
Flight sim addict

Rich: I haven't tryed the shooting games YET, but have been flying on-line for the last few years, and like you have the top of the line gaming system. MS Combat Flight sim 1,2,and3 are good, I Magic F/A 18E is better, MicroProse Falcon 4.0 is unreal and hard to master, Janes Fighters Anthology is a good one too.

Be carefull they can be addictive!!

Terry
Yeah, I've had a few flight simulators myself, but haven't played one recently. I tried a few a while back and didn't like them much. If one is TOO realistic, you never even see the bad guys before they launch missles at you and ruin your day. Plus I cannot land a plane for nothing. So if I don't get shot out of the sky, I have nothing else left to look forward to except running out of fuel and crashing, or trying to land, and crashing. :(

On the other hand, if the game is not very realistic, I will wind up disobeying orders and flying off to see what sort of trouble I can find. My side gets really pissed off when I shoot at them!

One of the games had a mission to fly point for Air Force One. That was back when we had the philanderer in chief as the pres. Well, I guess you all know what happened in that mission. :kill:

I've got a couple of games loaded up on the computer that I haven't had time to even look at. Elite Force II looks promising.

I also picked up another one that I hope to find time on Christmas day to play with: Harbinger. No idea what that one is about, but I think it is one of those mindless shoot-em up games. Just what I like! It's much easier to play when the only rules are SHOOT ANYTHING THAT IS NOT YOU.
