exception of a used, $50 single shot 3" mag 20 ga. Such a gun can handle all the "sport hunting", and beginner training that anyone needs to bother with. I'd never bother to own one at all. The pistol is more fun, more sporting, more relevant for training newbies and hunting, the canned rifle is far more efficient for foraging and fighting. The pistol is many times more likely to be PRESENT, when a gun is needed for defense, than ANY longarm, in "normal times". So time and money spent on the shotgun is just subtracted from what can be spent on the FAR more relevant pistol.

Thats the way to go Melvin. Put down any weapon that you are unable to shoot well. Never mind that the military and law enforcement use the shotgun all the time, of ole Mel can't handle it then its a pos. What a wussy.

Sure!

this was about 8 to 10 years ago, while installing double/triple wide mobilehomes, getting and maintaining decent labor/grunts was a constant hassle[if you didn't have to retrain them daily, you would on monday, after the weekend payday] i was hiring/working guys who lived in the rescue mission, pick them up/drop them off.

there was one guy that was starting to stick, and i admit, i liked this guy,'dino' i mean he would be cracking me up,with all sorts of funny stuff,he kept it light and the work day flew!

well, anyway, one evening we had a couple of beers with the customer[first and last time i'll break my own rule]

so i let 'dino' drive, he misses a turn, i say no biggee,as i know of a watering hole[big mistake#2] much later

we end up on the east side of town in a strip club with me in RETIREMENT MODE i.e. scotch on the rocks/cigar.

he's husslin' the ladies and ON THE PHONE alot!

time to go, and 'dino' wants to stop by a friend of his to pick up some of his personal effects[no problem, i think he did about 18 months in county lockup for assulting some guy that turned his girlfriend on to 'meth'. i don't like dopers etheir]

so we pull up to this nice brick home along the side walk inline with the front door,[about80'] away, motor running,i'm sitting there waiting for him to get wintercoat/birth cert.????? didn't know, let alone care.

when he got to the door he exhibted bizzare BEZERKER RAGE yelling about whipping somebodys ass bad,pounding/attempted door kick down, just plain crazy rage[i've never seen any thing like that in him, and i've known/worked him all of 3 weeks]

after the kick on the door ,i start yelling that i'm going to whip his crazy ass if he dosn't stop, and am reaching for the door handle of the idling 1 ton set truck, when the owner of the home SHOOTS threw the wooden door 2 quick blasts o/u 20ga. #71/2 bird shot. i'm seeing this in slow motion now, and heard the ballistic crack crack of the triggered loads, round 1 hit him about 3" below the left nipple, round #2hit square in the gut about waist line level[although, it could be reverse?] i remember about 18"x2" splinter of wood from the door knob side go flying out from under his left arm pit[ha!along with a bunch of other stuff] now this idiot comes running/hobbling back to the truck[and i'll never forget this to my dieing day] laughing ,saying wayne, they got me good! then drops it in drive and tears ass outta there[shooter#2 came from the back door and around and triggered a blast at the truck, tattooing the windshield and missing my right eye by about3"[after action pellet count] i'm in this W.T.F situation kinda in shock at what had just took place, dino suckin'/blowin'/dieing AND DRIVING, well he's fixin' to fall out,i take the wheel and using my left foot brake steer up on sidewalk between light pole/fire hydrant[not bad for being drunk just 5 minutes ago! trust me when i say those 3or4 minutes in the truck with his intestines opened up and a suckin' chest, only tarintino could come close to replicating]i slam truck in park/shut off engine/take keys[should have done it 2 hours ago] shake him back around saying i'll be back with help, i get a response of o.k. and then take off running to a service station 500yd.up the street praying that he didn't die on me[thats the fastest i've ever ran and the first since i shattered my left leg 3or 4 years before] barge in yelling instructions then haul ass back to truck, thinking of spray glue/rain gear in truck for a one way flapper for his chest wound[he was a gonner anyway, but i was gonna try]no need, the circus had arrived in force when i laid hands on the truck.

needless to say there was an extreme interest in me for about 6 hours DOWNTOWN till they knew he was going to live, aparently 'they'had a long history,i told the investagaiter[sp]to leave me the phuck out of this whole sh-bang[they did] the funny part a bout it is 'dino' took 2 pellets to the pecker they woudn't remove[i didn't look] so he will always have lead in his pencil[the last i heard he's being an idiot down in florida, somewhere]

i hope none of you think any more/less of me for posting this as per request

thanks.

Yep shotguns are very effective close range. While I'm not much of a shotgun person I have one around most of the time. Last one I has was an 1100 but I'm going to buy an 870 off of a friend of mine real soon.

That was a close/scary one that could happen to anybody under the right circumstances. I'm glad you got away okay. Thanks for sharing the story.
