first you have to define what "sniper' means. You can be "sniped at" with a .22 pistol, ya know. :) I believe that the term came from the Scottish game wardens, or some such, meaning and expert scout and shottist. A great many sniper HITS are achieved at what amounts to fairly close range. For instance ,the SWAT sniper average range for a shot is supposedly 75m. If that's so, and there's ANY SWAT sniper hits at 300m, it takes a LOT of 25m hits to bring the average down to 75m. For instance, if half of the shots are 300m, and half are at 25m, the average range is half of 325m, or 162m. If 1/3 are at 300m, and 2/3rds are at 25m, the average is 1/3rd of 350m, which is 116m. Pesky things, those numbers. :)

with a laser rangefinder, the only reason you'd have to "calculate" the range is if there's a lot of up and down angle to deal with. Nor is there much to worry about as to cleaning the gun, either. So the guy needs to learn what questions to ASK, and to do that, he needs to learn a LOT more about the subject in general.

Pythagoras's theory deals with the angles, if you can judge the degree of "grade" adequately. The rangefinder will tell you the linear distance, for an up or down angled shot, the theory will give you the distance that gravity is actually effecting the bullet, which is what you need to know.

need to know WHY you have to snipe, why you CAN'T get within a reasonable firing distance (as in 300m or so) and what makes you 'think" you are going to get a shot at a frontal, fully exposed stationary target, without getting shot yourself, etc. :) Terrain, situation, firing position, skill level of "sniper", etc, all have lots of bearing on what's what.

Bookwriter - Tom,

What kind of sniper do you want to know about? The police sniper, the military sniper or the assassin sniper? All 3 are similar in function but have different roles.

REALLY? I always thought that the military guys shot

just to scare people. Otherwise, explain the ridiculous ranges at which they OFTEN fire and the FREQUENT misses. :) See, son, the miltary sniper doesn't much CARE if he misses half of his shots. He is STILL "denying" the enemy the free use of the sniper's AO (area of operation) and he's still serving as a scout-observer, sending-taking useful info back to his superiors.

if someone snipes at you and your buddies, and misses 3/4 of the time, do you NOT scatter and take cover? bs you don't. so the sniper need not CARE if most of his hits are by LUCK. ANYTHING less than 50% is LUCK, in a "2 possible outcome" scenario, which is what shooting IS. you either hit or you miss, 2 possible outcomes. So you HAVE to get over 50% hits, or it's just LUCK. Sure, a guy who can "reach" a bit further, hit 80-90% of the time scares guys a bit more, but even a 25% hitter will STILL deny the enemy free use of the sniper's AO.

That part of the post is good info. Just don't count on them missing as much as you think they will.
