Soliciting help! Moderator wanted.

I think the number of posts here have finally gotten to be more than I can handle on my own. Hate to seem like Big Brother, but there are more derogatory statements made on this site than I am comfortable with, so I do think until people realize I am serious about cleaning this up and stop with that bs, I need to keep on top of it.

So, I am looking for some help. Anyone interested in being a moderator here?

Requirements would be that the person selected would be fair and neutral about the personality conflicts that are evident. Deletions and editing would be the BARE minimum to keep the context of a message to the point, and without the name calling and innuendos that everyone has been seeing here in the past.

What I would like to do is to get a list of people interested in being a moderator, then open up a poll for everyone else to vote on. I would like to have a moderator that everyone else can feel is fair and impartial and they would respect their judgement in issues where they have to step into.

So, any takers?

Rich count me in also. I think M88C's idea is worth consideration also.

Melvin doesn't like structure in his life. Which is the reason he has had such difficulties with the law.

Adding moderators, which will add structure to his existance, will greatly irritate him. As you're just finding out.

Oh well.....

Kind of a catch-22, I guess. Without his posting derogatory comments (as well as other people) I really don't need moderators, then do I?

It doesn't matter to me either way. I'm getting into my busy season, so I have other things that are much higher on the priority list. Which is why I wanted a moderator or two NOW, when I wouldn't be able to spend much time here. But is the problems go away instead, the results will be the same.

Everyone is welcome to come here and stay, if they are so inclined. Just as everyone is welcome to leave whenever they want to. It's not like I make any money off of this site or forsee that every happening.

It seems much friendlier now with just they inability for him to call us all by those names he likes so much!

Of course, his posts are just all red * now.....lol.

I'd moderate for you if it becomes necessary again, too.

Do what you feel the best about.

You have a good forum here. And it will survive with out MELVIN and his antics. I would get a couple of moderators, anyway, just because of the reduction in concern it would give you, and because of the fact that trolls are all over.

Heck, I have another site with over 11,500 members registered and only have three moderators there. I have seen far too many sites destroyed by moderators, so I am very picky about who I ask to help me out. I prefer to scrutinize the way a person handles him or her self and has put a lot of time and effort into helping out in the forums. I feel they have a vested interest in seeing the site survive and will have the site's best interests at heart.

In some respects I want to pick "promoters" and not necessarily "moderators". People who will promote the site by being there to pitch in and help with, as well as initiate, interesting and stimulating conversations.

Everyone is welcome to have disagreements, arguments, and general dislikes towards other particular people. I only ask that the discussions be done on a professional and adult level, and leave the name calling and derogatory statements to children who don't know how to get their point across otherwise.

Name calling makes everyone look bad, including my site. And as well, they never settle an issue in any way. Only facts can do that, as well as solidly based opinions presented in a logical and well reasoned manner.

Yeah, maybe I am hoping for too much.....

Rich,

If you want to promote the site and good conversations then why not have forum sponsors (isn't that something you have on fauna?) who double as moderators.

I would be willing to help out as either, but I would not want to do it if I was the only one.

All the best,

Glenn,

The sponsorship thing didn't work out all that well on Fauna. I have basically discontinued it, but those people who are sponsors over there and still active at it are continuing in that roles. Response was dismal for people to take that role, so it embarrassed me to keep on offering it.

Personally, I doubt it would work well here. I just don't think the volume of traffic is here yet where specialists in different sections is warranted.

I haven't had much time to look through many of the posts over the last few days, so I have no idea if the name calling is continuing or not. I would much rather have the maturity level raised by common consensus rather than having people force that upon people.

But if anyone has suggestions about how I should handle things here, I am willing to listen.

Thanks.

Rich, honestly the best solution I've seen is the one they've used at Patriotnet. Give Andy/.223 fan, etc his own forum. Lock him in so it's the only one he can post in, place a warning in the text for the forum selection and let him spam away. Anyone who does not want to participate has the entire rest of the board in which to post. If they want to hop in the fray, they can go to the GK forum and swing away, and since there'd be a warning about his offensive behavior, there's be no room for whining if anyone went in.

You wouldn't need moderators on any of the forums that way, and people could post about real topics without having to sift through his spam.

That's the best suggestion I can give.

Honestly, at this point I would rather leave that decision in each person's own hands. Everyone here has the capability of putting another user onto their IGNORE list, which will completely block anything they say from being visible to them. I can't see any point at this time of taking that decision away from each and every one of you.

I am still of the opinion that andy/223 fan does have some value and experience to contribute to this forum, and am still hoping that eventually he will realize that those antagonistic and derogatory style postings are his real worst enemy. But perhaps he has been on the defensive and under attack (deserved or not) for so long that now he doesn't know how to change. :shrugs: Occasionally I do see him make a post that gives me a glimmer of hope that at least the potential is still there for change.

Time will tell, I guess....

I agree that even the most offensive person(s) on these forums has seemingly gotten nice or at least respectful in some threads/posts; however the same person(s) remain(s) blatantly antagonistic in a foul and nasty manner in other threads and posts. With that in mind why not institute a points system. Sure this will require moderation, but it seems a fair and equitable solution to the problem. I thought it seemed to work at fauna, and now that you require registration (I think I saw you post that somewhere) well then maybe it would work here too.

I have got to say that lots of those truly nasty posts make this using this site much less of a pleasure than it should be. My guess is that allowing someone to rum amok with such ranting will only prove to defeat your hopes of getting more users to the site. I mean who wants to post a thread only to have a load of foul smelling crap thrown in their face by someone else? This happens repeatedly, and I think that it does not balance out any worthwhile contribution that this person makes. Of course, with just a little change, this person may have some really interesting info to post, that would be lots easier to discuss in the absence of the childish name calling. Instead of giving each user the responsibility of monitoring his posts to see if they are worthwhile, and instead of giving an option of either turning him off (ignoring), or deciding to take a chance and see if the posts he submits are decent today, thereby leaving responsibility to the remainder of the users of this site - why not leave the responsibility with the rogue user. Why make the rest of us have to do the work, when he should be the one who is responsible for what he writes? Make it his responsibility to either get it together or get out. So what if you lose his 10 or 20 or 30 threads a day when they are filled with vile, unrelenting, negativity that probably for the most part just makes the other registered users sick of his stuff and thereby sick of this site. Great the site has some use, that it would not get without him, but it is also in all likelihood losing the other potential users who are out there.

I realize it is probably a tough decision to make, but is his negative and nasty stuff the kind of thing you really want to keep your boat afloat just because there is plenty of it? Think of it this way, if your boat sinks in this storm, it sinks into a mighty stinky sea with all those turds floating around! Throw the ball into his court, make him decide to either make amends or to make an exit. I think he may choose the amends, and if not, then he has chosen to self destruct
:blowup01: :blowup01: :blowup01: :blowup01:
and I say good riddance. Hopefully the site's reputation will not be so tarnished by his ranting that you would then not be able to prosper by way of new registered users or returning registered users.

Of course you could always give him Hell, or even his own personal Hell as someone else suggested.

Good luck, and as usual I will probably still be here whatever you decide.
