In my SHTF fantasy, I am gonna live like Bert from the series and movie Tremors; but for me it will be a whole lot better!
Actually instead of a cabin in the woods I would prefer a concrete bunker under which I have a fallout shelter as my retirement home. It will Spartan on the upper level and be built in an inhospitable area so if anyone takes over the bunker they will not want to stay too long.
The fallout shelter/concrete bunker will be below ground right under my house but there will be no entry from the above ground house/bunker. In other words the house will have a basement, but the upper house will appear to be built over a concrete slab not over a cellar. Entrance to the basement will be from outside the house - no inside entry to be found by those looking for it, thereby making it seem as if the house was built on a slab. The entrance to the basement will be well camouflaged and not to close to the house. The basement ceiling will be I-Beam reinforced concrete - something over which you could drive a few tanks and it would hold. The entrance will be an offset pattern hallway like an L shape or double L (in case of radiation fallout - which travels in a straight line) with steel doors fire doors. There will be sufficient ventilation for the basement, but I will also have a compressed air supply in reserve for a few days worth of air for all the occupants at hard labor digging out the vent holes just in case. All vents for the basement will be camouflaged at the surface, and will be reinforced concrete shafts. There will be a generator for electricity (one for the topside and one for the basement) and also solar panels. The lighting will consist of fluorescent bulbs that emit sufficient UV for plant growth, and incandescent for ease on the eyes. There will be a greenhouse. There will be radiation detectors throughout as needed. There will be air filters to take out radiation, chemical and biological threats. There will be a fire control system. There will be a water source that directly pumps into the basement from its own well, and it too will be filtered. There will be full amenities such as kitchen area, living room area, toilet area, and sleeping quarters. The kitchen will have a large enough larder to feed 6 for a year. The toilet area will be built off to the side access through its own tunnel/hall and will utilize a septic system and also chemical disposal as back up. There will be a large supply of medical items. The basement, and the upstairs will contain large gun vaults. Both will contain lots of firepower, however various other guns will be hidden and readily available throughout. There will also be vaults for ammo. The upstairs will be a fully lived in abode. There will be a bucket of Pig's blood on ice. At least three corpses (legally obtained) will be kept on ice to lay out all riddled with bullet holes when the SHTF. They will be of size and shape to fit whatever clothing we leave behind. All clothing we have except that on our backs will be left there. We will have enough below to last through a year, and if not so what. There will be an attached garage with a couple of jeeps (screw the humers not enough gas mileage). Outside we will have seismic detectors and hidden video cams (and hidden far away too as nowadays I could place a camera 1/4 mile away and still cover my area well). I could go on and on but you get the picture.
So once the SHTF and it looks as if the bad guys are coming, out come the corpses already riddled with bullets. Out comes some pigs blood to be splattered around the bodies. Then start a little fire, that is right after we make the place look as if it was looted. Then we get our asses into the fallout shelter and dig in. For <font color=red>*</font><font color=red>*</font><font color=red>*</font><font color=red>*</font>s and giggles we will have a PC with plenty of PC games, and a DVD player, and music. The music collection will include lots of Doris Day songs like Que Sera Sera (to make me remember that anybody her that gets it :kill: once I am back above ground) and to make it a bit uncomfortable in my underground palace so that I will want to come out sometime. We will also have a treadmill and a stationary bike, and one of those BowFlex things. Lots of books too. Maybe even some knitting needles - who knows. Oh and plenty of rubbers and Viagra, and a massage table, steam room and a sauna.
I could go on and on and on but you get the idea, it will be my underground fortress/palace. Yeah this is the way to go and hideout if an Armageddon type nuclear strike ever comes our way, or if it just gets too much like the south Bronx all over the place! What a life for me and the family and the two 21 year old babes I pick to accompany us. You know I cannot wait - I am gonna look for the land starting now, and then start construction soon after that. retirement is just around the corner. Who knows, maybe it will come true if I hit the MegaMillions lottery!
