(that's 2640 ft, and no, the 308 does not AVERAGE 2400 fps over that distance) Any animal can EASILY take one step in .5 second, resulting in a gut hit. You have ZERO control over the animal, so any such long shots are the act of an ASSHOLE, who doesn't CARE if he loses a gut shot animal.

Well, considering that I've been hunting for nearly 25 years and in that time, I have had one deer not go down within 20 yards of where I hit it... I'd say you are making quite a bit of an assumption. Oh, that one deer was the first one I ever shot too.
