Most defensive needs for a handgun are in darkness, within 12-14 feet, occur with little warning, and only are won or lost in a couple of seconds. The nature of the problem also suggests that the defender will be unlikely to use the sights. Since an attacker no further than 12-14 feet could easily pounce before the defender can shoot, the defender may need one hand to deflect the incoming attack. This may be especially true if there are multiple attackers.

With this definition of the problem, it seems to me that either a revolver or auto can serve equally well.

IF the defender is good enough, but

99+% AINT. and IF the pistol and its load are swift enough into action (few are, due to lack of skill) and in the 1 in 10 chance that just the SHOWING of the pistol doesn't suffice to stop the attack, and in the 1in 2 chances that a .22 hit or two (swiftly applied to the chest) wouldn't stop him, then one needs LOTS of power, delivered REALLY swiftly, and probably will need to brain the guy. So very few guns or men are capable of delivering such, that discussing it is silly, really, on public forums. The lack of awareness, hand to hand skills, ruthlessness, fitness, etc is just so appalling as to make ya puke to consider it.

You don't need lots of power, shoot him once with any real firearm and they'll back off. Unless they're on PCP of just REALLY wants that 13" TV your mom lets you keep in your room (mom's basement).

SOME do, but basically, anyone crazy,

desperate, doped up enough, enraged enough, to make you shoot him at ALL is off of the scale of nearly all human experience. Such men are ANIMALS, and nobody with ANY experience at ALL consideres most handgun loads capable of stopping even a 30 lb pitbull with a chest hit. :)
