If the upcoming election does result in strict AR controls, we maybe looking at SKS's (or a modern type of such kind) to become very popular. Just as long as those terrible bayonet's are removed. That would put a stop to all those drive-by bayonetings.

I wonder if we'll start seeing modifications of designs, like the fixed-magazine AR's & such that popped up during the 94-04 awb.

I wonder if an American company could make an SKS without charging an arm and a leg...or making a " pot metal pipe bomb " like some of Century's abortions.

no reason to bother, when they offer $500 AR's. and the AR is so superior that the SKS would have to sell for $100 to have a chance at competing.

Maybe some of the " off the shelf" mods I've done(better rear sight, Kivari Trigger etc)could be done on the production line...keep everything else stock...designate the " bayonet mount " as an " accessory point" for bipods, etc.
Gotta wonder if it could be done well without being prohibitively expensive at retail level.
Chrome bore could be nitrided instead... Maybe make it other calibers as well while retaining the stripper clip loading feature and fixed magazine with a hinged bottom.

Not disagreeing with you completely. But I was brainstorming on a " Volkskarabiner" idea or a " Narodniye Vintovka" idea to slip by a possibly more restrictive future.

I remember when you praised the SKS.

I like Russian blonde's, but like has nothing to do with anything, if there's no reason for it. there's any number of things that I don't like about the AR, but it's still by far the best answer.

One of mine, a 1950 Tula is laminate. Good rifle, but oddly enough I prefer the hardwood stocks...and another one of my oddball tendencies is -when talking folding bayonets- I prefer the spike.

I just see no reason to accept flash and noise in a fighting rifle, when it can be prevented. Rifles that make it difficult to have decent "reach" to distance while being still a handy size (with the can mounted) just make no sense. 20" sks or AK barrel and 8" of can is not handy. Gunpeople have come to accept all the horrific noise of shooting, , but it's a horrible handicap and should NOT be accepted.

you can always remove the can, if noise is your thing. But if you need the can, you can't just crap one. One can always make noise with the centerfire pistol, if noise is the desideratum. To me, the rifle is for war, or shtf foraging. For everything else, the pistol suffices, and is many, many times more likely to be needed than the rifle, and more likely to BE AT HAND (than any longarm) when a gun is needed.

Agree, with only the minor caveat that the long gun is better for non-shtf hunting as well. But other than that, the pistol is hugely more important imo.

everyone has shot multiple deer with a rifle. how many have done so with a pocket 9mm, eh? :) From a baited tree stand, it's not hard to arrange. Ditto hogs and black bear, too.

Never taken deer with a handgun. I've gone out deer hunting with handguns several times (revolver & 1911 both), but the first couple times I never saw anything, and the last time I wasn't close enough to tell if it was legal due to the stupid "3-point" rule here. Basically, you can take large bucks, young button-bucks, and even doe, but a small-to-medium buck is illegal in the area I hunt.

Close-in, like from a stand, it'd be plenty doable; but I never hunt from a stand, at least yet. That's the direction I'm likely to be heading though. My eyes aren't good enough for non-stand-hunting with an iron-sighted handgun anymore and don't own any handguns other than iron-sighted. In the near future, I figure to start stand hunting. Got one family member whose stand is actually heated, and I'm getting to where that doesn't sound like a bad idea myself...

Only deer I ever took(successfully) with a handgun, was an old Ruger Blackhawk .357 7inch barrel.Keith type hardcast 158grain HP's with gas checks...a LONG time ago. Also TRIED with a friend's Glock 20 10 mm. Me and the deer kept intersecting at times and places where it just wasn't the right time/place for the shot.He agreed to stop laughing at me,I agreed not to shoot.
WTH,it was a good hike,if nothing else.I still enjoyed myself, and apparently so did the deer.

I never tried a handgun, although with right caliber and pistol/revolver it is can be done. Quite a challenge and worth bragging rights. I stick with the basics, but have used the Garand and SKS successfully. My Son got his first Deer (160 lb. Doe) with an SKS "paratrooper" Carbine. .357 Magnum would be the minimum, I would think or 10MM in semi-auto. Shot [placement would have to be exact unless you like hiking.

SKS is surprisingly accurate with heavy for caliber SP and ball...I had particularly good results with the 154 grain stuff...this was with my Tula and a Chicom spiker, with 20 inch barrels. Improve the trigger and the rear sight, and they only get better.
Nop,not an AR...but if all I had time to grab and run with was an SKS and a bandolier/10 pocket carrier of ammo on stripper clips and my hearing protection? Yeah,I can make a fight of it-and it wouldn't be as much of a detriment to me.
