Engine blocks stop them 3 ft of loose dirt, a foot of sandbags stops them, concrete stops them, and even GLASS will deflect them,if the hit is not at a nice 90 degree angle, and the target is more than a few inches behind the glass, especially windshield glass. Also, glass will "move" the image of the target a bit, if it's not perfectly transparent(and it rarely is). The worse the impact angle, the more the image is out of line with where the target REALLY is. Being without the .22 unit, the GI rifle rd, the sound suppressor is FAR worse than being without more than 1/4mile of range, or the 2500 ft lbs of energy of the 308. Stealth and discretion are far more likely to save you than stupidly shooting at everyone, on sight, at any range, in any cover.

As far as any place in any timeframe, maybe, maybe not. You may have a limited amount of time to get out of an area that has been contaminated by fallout, disease, is burning, etc.

Range, last time I checked, a round effective at 400yds or more was still effective at 100yds or less. The opposite is not always true. So why handicap yourself.

But, depending on your AO, the shorter range weapons may be the best choice. It is not a one size fits all situation.

Also why does having a .308 force us to shoot everyone on sight?

The decision to shoot/not shoot is independant of the caliber - or can you elaborate?

you really post some full pants on head retarded stuff. You hope you won't need a long range rifle, but you don't know that you won't. You also seem incapable of grasping that suppressors exist for .308, .338. and even 50 BMG.
