either avoid it entirely, or only pass thru it at night. it's really hard to make a night ambush worth a crap, especially under shtf conditions, and virtually noone is going to have the time to WASTE on maintaining such an ambush-ready condition. DETECTING your presence, at night, is one thing, HITTING you with a bullet is quite another. Who's going to HAVE lots of ammo, to be spraying the brush and darkness with, every time that they hear a twig snap, hmm? Nobody, that's who. such shooting will just attract MORE killers.
