I've heard a bit about what happened in Beslan, Russia and wanted to pass it on. Here is a crude sequence of events:
1) Older students located away from the gym decided to break out. They each grab small children to carry them to safety. Some of these older students carried as many as four small children.
2) The Muslim terrorists realise what the students are doing and begin spraying automatic fire at them.
3) A female Muslim terrorist detonates the explosives in the gym.
4) Russian commandos have no other option but to immediately assault. They drive armored personnel carriers through the walls, open the hatches and assault. The assaulting Russian commandos take 100% casualties, but those still alive continue to fight despite their wounds.
5) Some of the Muslim terrorists hold up small children as human shields to escape the assault. Local people begin pursuing the escaping terrorists. Some of the local people are seen armed.
6) The escaping Muslim terrorists fire at the local people, hitting many.
7) Local people overwhelm the escaping terrorists. Most of the escaping terrorists die as a result. Russian soldiers, police and commandoes manage to keep at least two terrorists alive for questioning.
Approximately 340 Russians were killed, half of them children.
What I heard about the "Chechen" Muslim terrorists, but have not confirmed:
a) 20 were Al Qaeda
b) 6 were Syrian
c) the non-Chechen terrorists were "loaned" to the Chechen cause for this attack.
