I'm talking HUNTING here, fair chase. For Pheasant, Ruffed Grouse, and Woodcock you need a shotgun, pump or autoloader are best, though a double barrel or single shot will work. Just as important if you want to bring home the birds is a good hunting Dog. Without a Dog you'll walk past and even over birds (especially Grouse) that will fly up at your feet and scare the crap out of you, messing up your shot. Also, Pheasants run and hide in thick brush when hit but not killed. Grouse can blend in with dead leaves and in thickets so that you'll never find them. I hunt Pheasant and Grouse regularly in season, not with a .22 on the Internet.

so? I've killed 100's of doves, quail and the like, on the sit, year round, with BB gun, then .22lr rifle, then .22 handgun. I've always found it to be much more entertaining than walking around, making noise with a 12 ga.. Legal hunting season is far too short. Most of the year, you have to REALLY run up on quail to make them take wing. As a kid, I wiped-out an entire covey of quail with a 22" barreled M67 and 22 Shorts. It was windy/noisy in the fallen oak leaves. I just kept picking off the last one in line. The rest of them never seemed to notice.

Sitting on the hood of my dad's Pu truck, in our garage, I could brace my m52 match rifle (k6 weaver scope) over the top of the truck and fire out of the open overhead door. About 40 ft away, across the street, was neighbors' burn barrel (Litchfield, ILL). Starlings would land on the barrel's edge and I'd use a CB cap to knock them down into the barrel. After a while, a cat noticed that the birds were going in, but not coming out. He comes stalking along, and I let his nose a bit and put a CB thru one of his ears and out the other. Only a very minor trickle of blood and brain fluid on the exit side. Stretched him out cold. The M52 had been "sporterized" by Bob Imhoff, its previous owner, cutting the barrel to 19". It had a Kenyon set trigger and with Eley tenex, would literally print 1 hole groups at 50 yds, from the bench. even with that poor of a scope. It was a heavy pos to lug around the woods, tho, so I sold it. I used the Tenex's to stiffen many critters, with brain shots, sometimes putting the bullet right up a nostril. Such hits on rabbits would put them on their backs, all 4 legs out stiff, pointing up. . I could call which bill, upper or lower, I was going to shoot off of a bird at 50 ft, if I could brace the rifle on something. Very entertaining and informative about the foraging potential of a quiet rifle.

And this is about sport hunting how? Shooting cats and Starlings? You have never really hunted in your life, have you?

Terry, that is the impression that I have gotten regarding his ability. He might be capable of killing any small animals but I doubt that he has the capability of maximizing the meat he could recover.
