$500 gun, 60c a shot shells, short range, low power, slow repeat hits, not much accuracy, etc.. Either save the money by getting a $150 used pump 12 ga, with rifle sights, or spend the same money you wasted on 45-70, get a used, alloy framed BAR in 308, and save 40c a shot and have 2-3x the effective range, twice as fast repeat hits, BOSS compensator, considerably less recoil, threaded muzzle, etc. The BAR will be a lOT easier to resell, closer to what you paid for it, than any 45-70 will, too. It's not as hard to find a sucker for 308 auto as it is to find a sucker for 45-70. 12 ga pump and slugs comes close enough to 45-70 performance, along with bird and buckshot uses, to make it at LEAST as "good" a choice as 45-70. All you have to do is remove the 12 ga recoil pad and use magnum shells, if you are just feeling masochistic, ya know.

Are old, "obsolete" calibers hard to resell? Can you loose money? Well today I sold my 1905 Winchester model 94 Carbine in .38-55 (still have another .38-55). I bought it for $100.00 and 800 12 gauge reloads. Sold it today for $550.00. I guess that blows his theory all to h*ll.

Already have a couple of 12 ga pump guns so that's taken care of. The BAR won't do anymore than my Remington M700 will do, but if I wanted one, I'd just buy one! I love being able to buy and sell as I want to. but then I didn't screw up my life , like gunkid did!

I guess that 45-70 could be called a "luxury". I'm kinda enthralled with low tech, archaic technology that "works", anyway. But, being able to reward yourself for a life lived without having to duck the leo or someone else you have alienated because you do not know how to act, is it's own reward.
Luxury UP!

Well, those old cartridges are very popular nowadays. I could sell any one of my .45-70s before I could sell my .308s.

The .45-70 does NOT kick the crap out of you unless you're firing some of Garrett's Tyrannosaur loads, which you don't need unless you're going to Africa (BTW the Garrett loads have been proven to outpenetrate .458 Winchester loads, which is a product of people trying to get high velocities out of the .458, rather than using a heavier bullet). Of course the short bus rider thinks you need a compensator of some kind to fire a .22, so what does he know?

You do NOT need an autorifle to hunt, or even to survive. It's a luxury and nice in a fight, but not an absolute need. Some people just don't get that SHTF won't be combat 24/7, or necessarily very often, there's too much else to do, and NOT everything has to have anything to do with SHTF. Those of us that CAN own SHTF gear (unlike the short bus rider) already HAVE it. Where's that kit list eh?

Those old cartridges are FUN, and still effective (I've already relayed how a .45-70 killed a man wearing RIFLE armor with one 405-gr. shot to the chest, something your .22 especially with your beloved softpoints WON'T do).

Oh, and 12-ga slugs have no where near the performance of a .45-70. We realize you can't shoot much past pistol range and hit anything, but the .45-70 can, and it's done regularly with people using IRON sights. Slugs do not get anywhere near the range, accuracy or penetration.

I really need to get a 45-70. my son has one and it is a great gun. It's amazing the amount of jealous whining that goes on. It becomes more and more clear just how much fear he has for recoil and noise - seems like every other post has to mention one or the other, or both.

Don't have a 45-70 but came close a few times. What I do have is a 444 Marlin, flatter shooting an more knock down power, also kicks a little more, maybe a lot more! Had to put a slip on recoil pad to shoot from the bench. 265 gr. Hornaday bullet will flat turn a deer inside out. A 310 gr. Lee cast ain't no slouch either. Powerful rifle. For fun I just load my .44 Mag. cast bullet. Fun to explode old bowling balls, try that with your pos shorty ar.

Never had one except that debacle of a trapdoor Springfield I never fired but wanted to fix up.

Biggest I did have a Browning high wall in .454Cas. and a Winchester (japanese made).405 Big Medicine edition.

Tardious Maximus needs to look at what Marlin .45-70's are selling for on Goonbroker
right now. Not to mention the outrageous prices in some local shops.
Yeah sure they don't hold their value 🙄 even before the bankruptcy of the freedom group the pre-idiot switch Marlins where gaining a collectors value a little bit.
