I remember someone doing a barrel cut-down test on the .308 much like BBTI's testing, probably 5-10 years ago. IIRC, they lost 20-25 fps on average for every inch of barrel lost, at least down to 16" or so; again iirc, I could be wrong on that. Not as sensitive to barrel length as the .223, which loses something like 40 to 90 fps per inch lost; at least from normal rifle lengths down to 10" or so.

Yeah and previous to that about 25years ago either American Rifleman or Guns and Ammo did something similar to a .308winhester rifle.
I don't know about other calibers but that's why after their studies I had a local gun smith shorten the barrel on my heavy barrel bolt action to 22 inches.
