to have the 308's penetration and power advantage (it has ZERO realistic range advantage over 223, that's well-proven) and give up the huge advantages of a silencer. is being able to shoot a couple of elk per year (beyond the 100 yd braining range of 223) WORTH calling in every enemy within 1.5 miles of you? that's moronic, on the face of it.

in the military you have LOTS of help. 100 taxpayers are behind every soldier on the front, 10 logistics/training people are behind every guy on the front. there's always the good old usa to get flown back to, if you're sick or hurt. you can call in LOTS of air-suppport, re-supply, etc.

if shtf, you have NONE of that. So the only option that makes any sense is remain undetected and if any shooting has to be done, it should be silenced ambushes, everybody hit before they have a clue where you are firing from.

you can't GET lots of power from a shorty 308, and you can't get fast handling from a long barreled, silenced 308. so it's just effing RETARDED to "think" that the 308 is what you want. 30 ak, maybe but you don't gain much of anything and lose the potential use of GI ammo, mags, parts.

sure, we all hate the idea of becoming a looter, so what? would you rather be nice and watch your loved ones starve? how will you know if a given cow "belongs" to anyone, hmm? that owner is probably dead. you have the option, with a moutainbike, of a 50 mile radius around you. you aint telling me you know every farmer/rancher within 50 miles of you, or what happened to them all once shtf. So, either spend 1k per person stockpiling food now, or be ready to pop a few cows, at most 2 per week and 1 per week if you're alone. makes FAR more sense than being noticed/shot while hunting elk, much less a pissant amout of meat like a deer. average weight of deer in US is well under 100 lbs. note

https://www.google.com/webhp?source...ie=UTF-8#q=average+weight+of+mule+deer+in+USA

half of deer population AINT bucks and many are juveniles. that greatly lowers the average weight of "all deer". the 300 lbers you hear about got fat on CORN, man, post shtf, dog packs will be running them day and night, they wont last long and they'll lose weight fast! only a bit over half of any animals live weight is edible meat. so you average at most 60 lbs, lasts you maybe 2 months (for one person) IF you have other sources of meat. So if you're laying in a supply for a year, for a family, you need DOZENS of deer, man. So the hunting is OUT, you'll have to snare them. Elk and moose can be snared, too. So the "big game "claim for 30 caliber is bs. besides, if you know enough to set up baiting stations for deer, you can use a silenced .22 rifle and subsonic ammo to brain them, perhaps to 50 yds, but half that far is a much better idea. bow hunters dont use bait and still get trophy bucks, often from 30 ft and less. sometimes, it's 3 yds, straight down into their spines.
