I blasted a few dozen rounds off today with a mint Yugo 59/66 I bought years ago. Like shooting a .22 with the built in recoil pad, and very accurate. Just glad I didn't have to carry this beast around!
the garand is heavier, as is the FAL. and those are "so great". Pat had a Russian sks, I shot it a bit. hold the butt of that sks against your nose, without resisting the recoil, fire it and tell me it's like a .22lr. 130 grs at 2300 fps, is the same recoil as 230 grs at 1300 fps. 22lr is 36 grs at 1300 fps, or less. So the 30 ak has 6x as much recoil as the .22 and almost double that of the 223.
I used the SKS during a number of WW2 re-enactor matches I've participated in, personally I was never happy with the accuracy it produced with surplus ammunition and it was too darn expensive to reload for given the design of the firearm.
when you could get them for 1/5th the price of an AR, and when 30 AK ammo was 1/3rd the cost of 223, ammo ok, but now the SKS's cost over half of the price of the AR, and the ammo cost is nearly the same so why bother with an sks, unless you are traitor enough to keep paying taxes in a state that has mandated internal mags.
